What if the secret to better energy, confidence and overall health was waiting for you in the gym? Hint: it is.

Strength training, or using resistance like body weight, free weights, machines, bands etc., may be the most underrated tool for improving your health and quality of life. According to Harvard Health, research shows a strong correlation between strength training and longevity, allowing you to live longer with more independence and less risk for injury and disease. This is largely because strength training allows you to preserve the muscle you have and helps you build more — and muscle is a powerful ally. Strength training also provides physical and mental benefits such as enhanced metabolism and body composition, stronger bone density, cardiovascular health, improved brain function, improved balance, less stress and better mood.

In short, building strength is a powerful form of self-care.

For a well-rounded strength routine, it’s important to strength train all major muscle groups (chest, back, legs/glutes, shoulders, arms and core) at least twice per week, move in all planes of motion (front to back, side to side and rotational) and utilize the primary movement patterns (squat, lunge, hinge, push, pull and carry) within your training. Consistency is also key — progress takes time, so be patient and enjoy the journey.
